Blackstone River State Park -- March 2008

Just when we thought we knew how badly governments spend money, we came across this wonderful project for the people. There is a program afoot to build a bike trail from Florida thru Maine and This is the local manifestation of it at this time. Blackstone State Park is Rhode Island's newest park and is actually a long - right now 16 miles - strip along the Blackstone river. We hiked several miles of it and were delighted. Find out more here.

March is cold and often stormy and grey in Rhode Island. Still, if that is what is offered, then that is what we will take. This part of the trial runs for three miles between Manville and Cumberland. The river is wide and there are three dams along that short portion. The trail (actually a paved bike path) uses existing easements and rights of way along the river and a working railroad.

There is a mixture of old and new history along the trail. An old fiberglass factory was purchased by remodeled into some very nice loft apartments which sit right on the trail and river. Major roads are bridged high above the trail.

Wildlife exists along the river and we wish we were there in the Spring. Possibly the job assignment lottery will put us there. On this day there was a sleepy (cold) mallard, a muskrat, and a pair of Canada Geese.

Also seen but not when a camera was handy were Blue Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Robin, Crows, Cardinal, and Wood Duck. Oh, yeah - and a Painted Turtle.

The last Sunday in March was bright and sunny so we took another walk in the Park. lots of turtles and lots of Canadian Geese. Lots of people for a cold day. It is good that such a neat park gets so much use.
