Maple Syrup at Sturbridge, Mass. March - 23, 2008 This was the way that Dennis Celebrated Easter. He was invited by Melissa to attend the annual maple syrup harvest festival and Cousin John's house in Sturbridge. It included a pancake breakfast and an up-close look at the making of maple syrup right there on the spot. They have their own syrup evaporator to boil the sap into wonderful syrup. The sap actually is the thickness of water and boils down at a rate of 10 gal of sap to leave 1 qt. of syrup. Their evaporator uses wood splits - not gas and the process has not really changed over hundreds of years. And, along with some of Melissa's family, we celebrated the season when the sap is on the move. |
